It isn’t so easy to find something really out of the ordinary in Princess Iolanthe - the Mondomarine Displacement 45 Metres designed by SYDAC increasing up to forty-nine the number of yachts launched by the Shipyard of Savona - as she is essentially classic both for the external lines by Luca Dini and the sober and full of light interiors, designed by Jean Pierre Fantini. However this doesn’t mean this yacht lacks personality; Princess Iolanthe, actually, isn’t a “floating villa” and will be used by her Owner not only for long cruises in Mediterranean but also to cross the Atlantic as far as the Caribbean warm and quiet waters and, then, to reach those cold and really more challenging of Alaska. Princess Iolanthe is enough strong, reliable, cosy and comfortable to be able to face all these adventures; and on these accounts Mondomarine likes to call her as an “Elegant and mighty Lady”.
The main “target” asked to SYDAC by the Owner and Mondomarine was to realize a 45 metres yacht with steel hull and aluminium superstructure able to maximize the rooms remaining however within the 500 TSL and gaining the highest class (Lloyds Register of Shipping + MCA “Unrestricted”).
To that end the hull dimensions, and in particular the 9 metres wide set after complex calculations on the stability by flooding, were built not to penalize the volumes of superstructure, really important; while the 4.5 metres construction height was fixed according to a scrupulous weight examination.
The hull, typically displacing with bulb, keeps astern an addition characterization, typical of projects by SYDAC for Mondomarine, which improves speed performances and increases rolling damping; the bottom, the additions and the interaction hull-propeller (5 bladed Detra “High Skew”) are the result of experiences gained by the planning team and their efficacy was checked during tests with an uncommon sized model in the tank of El Pardo in Madrid. The results of these studies and experimentations are the maximum speed of 16 knots up to which the two CAT 3512B are able to drive the 455 tons by full load of Princess Iolanthe and the range of 4,000 miles at the economy speed of 12 knots.
From a purely and typically stylistic point of view Princess Iolanthe differs from the previous yachts by Mondomarine for her more sporting external lines that Luca Dini designed applying the modern tendencies of nautical design; the trends and lines are winding but characterized by evident and of great effect gleanings; and each surface is “worked” with little recesses, cuts and edges creating light and shade games alike the typical ones of sports cars.
The wide outdoor areas dedicated to relax are located among the sun-deck, the forward area of the wheelhouse – ideal for having breakfast, a drink or sun-bathes without being seen from the quay – and the stern cockpits of the main and the upper deck.
The sun-deck is, ideally, divided in three areas by the large roll-bar creating a middle area constantly shady where is located the dining table; a bar counter and a Jacuzzi surrounded by a large sun-chair occupy the deck bow area whereas the stern one is fitted out with basket chairs for relaxing and conversation, similar to those fitting out the stern cockpits.
The interior lay-out develops in a rather traditional way even though don’t lack some peculiar and noteworthy solutions.
The first one is the wide welcome area-in-the-round from which you can reach the main deck salon; sure sensational is the spectacular impact matching the technical choice of a double sliding door without the classic coaming on the deck, studied in collaboration with Lloyds Register. This solution allows to “insert” ideally the two little sofas fitting out the lobby alternatively in the large salon or in the cockpit, creating, anyway, a secluded area, suitable for a more confidential conversation or to read a book. Another peculiarity of this deck is the main entrance foyer, amidships starboard, with access from the external communication trench and near the royal foldaway ladder; this is the traditional solution for all large yachts and cruising ships, in acknowledgement of Princess Iolanthe’s dimensions and class. Finally, quite unusual is the choice to destine for dining room the stern area of the upper deck salon instead of obtaining it in the main deck.
From the entrance foyer the guests can head, proceeding on their left, to the large salon or go down to the lower deck where are located the four large guests cabins, two double cabins with bathroom provided with bathtub and two twin-bedded with bathroom and shower; the same stairway leads, then, to the upper deck where is located the second salon, with dining room and bar, particularly full of light thanks to its large windows, a little sitting-room provided with sofa-bed and therefore convertible in a twin-bedded cabin if connected to the contiguous service bathroom which thus performs a double function and, finally, the control area, with the wheelhouse, the Captain’s cabin and his office.
The full-beam area forward on the main deck is reserved for the Owner; the suite is composed by the office, the real cabin and two bathrooms communicating through the passing shower.
Finally, the main deck contains, on the left, the galley provided with professional fitting out to be able to manage the charter needs too; a secondary access, next to the galley, leads to the comfortable crew quarter.
For interior décor looked after by Jean Pierre Fantini, the Owner gave as a point of reference an already sailing yacht characterized by the contrast between the wood colour and that of classic-fashioned fabrics. At the same time, as Princess Iolanthe is used for charter too, the design had to be able to appeal the tastes of a greater number of people and the overall maintenance had to result as easier as possible.
The preliminary showed has favourably impressed the Owner who, after having expanded on design topics and colour schemes, approved it with pleasure.
The resulting atmosphere is relaxing thanks to light coloured fabrics and carpets, emphasized by the three different wood species chosen for matching; in well defined areas some marked design concepts gave prestige and refinement to the rooms; and the overall design can be defined as “Classic Contemporary Style”.
The comfort aboard isn’t, however, only due to the atmosphere created by the designer; from a strictly planning point of view Mondomarine concurs in a substantial way to the achievement of an high comfort standard “soundproofing” the floors, ceilings and walls from metallic frames through floating supports reducing to a very low level noisiness and vibrations in all of the rooms.
In summary, a curiosity: in the large peak serving as back for the stern sofa of the main deck cockpit is located a crane with an up to 7 metres radius, allowing the discharge of the high-powered byke housed in the large garage, astern of the engine room, provided with control-room, that houses the large main tender too.
